Death / Rebirth
Set of 8 Postcards
About the paintings…
The four paintings in this postcard set were all inspired by urban wildlife in the DC area, and by the cycles of death and rebirth that typify natural processes.
The first two paintings—the first, a portrait of a red fox (Vulpes vulpes); the second, the fox’s skull, grown through with a vine of native Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia)—are pieces I made in tribute to a fox that startled me while exploring the property of an overgrown, abandoned building in northeast DC. Encountering the bright red fox amidst so much broken glass, crumbling concrete, and masonry turning green with new leaves was like seeing a ghost—but not a ghost, just a fox, very much alive and not symbolic of anything but itself. Read more about that day here.
The second two paintings—an ostrich fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris) and a miniature painting of an American crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) chasing a red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)—are both inspired by the rebirth of springtime. The baby fiddleheads of ostrich ferns are a Spring delicacy that my family seeks out in mid-Atlantic woodlands. On one of those foraging outings this year, I watched as a crow harassed a red-tailed hawk far above my head, past the treetops. Red-tails are good-luck blessings in my family, and of course crows are symbolic of death; but again, animals symbolize nothing but themselves. Crows just hate hawks, especially in springtime when they are nesting. The crow chased the hawk off into the distance, squalling all the way, and I went home to paint them.
